Getting dizzy when playing the flute

Getting dizzy when playing the flute?!

Sep 30, 2016

If you're a flute player and you get dizzy when playing, or if you're a flute teacher and your students get dizzy when they play, here's why...

How to Fix Getting Dizzy When Playing the Flute!

You're using too much air, too quickly!

When you have too big an embouchure hole, too much air comes out. When that happens, you use up your air too quickly when you blow, which means you have to breathe IN more often.

And when you do that, your brain gets overloaded with oxygen and you get dizzy!

"Proper flute technique, explained clearly, is like a magical quick fix!"

Hi, flute players. I get asked all the time by adult flute players, why they get dizzy when they play. So I'm gonna tell you in this video, how -  no, more like why you get dizzy when you play and the steps that you can take to begin to fix that.

Just so you know, I'm Jane Cavanagh and I'm a flute teacher and flute player in Australia, as you can probably tell from the way I speak. Getting dizzy when you play is because you are using too much air and you are therefore breathing in more air than what you should be for your brain's amount of oxygen that it needs. So your brain is just having a bit of an explosion going, oh my God, too much air, gonna get dizzy, force you to lie down. That's what's happening.

So if you want your sound to sound like this, and to be able to hold long notes easily, I'm gonna show you what to do.

You might find that you play and sound like this. So you probably noticed a few things, a big hole in my mouth and me breathing after every note. That makes me dizzy. That's crazy. <laugh> You're getting dizzy like I said, because you are using you're breathing in too much air. The reason you're breathing in too much air is because the hole in your mouth is too big.

If you make the hole in your mouth smaller, by closing your mouth, rather than squeezing your mouth shut, you're going to use less air. And the cool thing about this is that if you use less air and you focus it, you are instantly going to improve your sound. Have a listen to the difference.

So that was closing my mouth and I was also focusing the air. So you can hear how the sound changes when I close my mouth and you won't get dizzy if you do that, you'll end up being able to play like this. And have a few notes in one breath.

You'll be breathing in less and your brain won't be having a bit of an explosion of going, ah, too much air, too much oxygen. If you want more quick fixes like this, I call 'em quick fixes through proper technique. Cause it's not really a quick fix at all. It's like a real fix through proper technique. Put your name below and your email address. And I'll send you more of these videos as I create them.

And when you sign up below, you'll be letting me know, which is helpful for me to know that you might be interested in a course like this, cuz I'm wondering would people actually like a more in depth course about this kind of stuff, flute technique.
